Some things are funny and can be joked about but other things are not. Jokes about Selena Gomez’s kidney falls in the not funny category according to many fans out there.
In a recent episode of “Saved by the Bell” two characters wonder who donated a kidney to Selena Gomez in 2017, two years after she revealed she had been diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease.
One wonders if it was her ex-boyfriend Justin Beiber’s mother while the other thinks it could be her former best friend Demi Levato.
In a separate scene there is a piece of graffiti which reads "Does Selena Gomez even have kidneys?"
After receiving backlash on Saturday 28 November, NBCUniversal’s peacock, the production company behind saved by the bell apologised and made a statement to Variety.
"We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena's health," they said in the statement. "We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC."
The actual donor was her friend Francia Raisa who was completely forgotten it would seem and as the donor who would be a better judge to determine whether the statement was offensive or not than Raisa herself. In response on twitter she wrote;
"Appreciate the apology but let's not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall," the "Grown-ish" actress wrote.
Many users were supportive of her writing;
“you literally saved a life donating your kidney to selena and for them to make fun of it like that it’s really low, disgusting and disrespectful, I’m glad u are making your voice heard we are with you.
Another wrote;
“They did spread false information about the donor they owe you an apology”
Raisa and Gomez have been friends since 2007 after they met at the hospital. What she did for Selena is no doubt something that Selena would never forget. We hope she gets the apology she deserves. Tell us what you think?
