This year’s Grammy award nominations were announced and there were some surprises which have caught some celebs off guard. We give you a round up of all you need to know from Nicki Minaj, Justin Beiber, the Weeknd and Selena Gomez so stay tuned till the end
First up, Nicki Minaj
Now, imagine the joy of being nominated for an award and then the disappointment of not winning. Now imagine this happening 10 times, you are going end up somewhat miffed, right? Well ask Nicki Minaj and she will tell you exactly how miffed.
The 37 year old rapper has received 10 nominations during her long career but never won any and on Tuesday 24 November, she took to social media to show how unhappy she was with the recording academy after the 2021 nominations were announced in the possible hope she could comfort those that didn’t get any.
Talking of the 2012 awards, she wrote on Twitter;
‘Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard. She added, ‘They gave it to the white man Bon Iver’
This isn’t the first time Nicki Minaj has spoken out against the recording academy, back in February 2019 she claimed that the academy had treated her unfairly and she was not allowed to speak up.
"I was bullied into staying quiet for 7 years out of fear," she claimed on social media back in February 2019.
Next our favourite singer Justin Bieber
After this year’s nominations were announced, Justin Bieber also took to social media with a message to fans.
"To the Grammys, I am flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry," he wrote.
"I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said, I set out to make an R&B album.
Changes was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album which is very strange to me."
Justin's Changes is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album alongside artists including Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga.
Next, is the curious case of the artist, The Weeknd
The Weeknd, otherwise known as Abel was also snubbed and completely left off all categories. This has confused many, especially given his strong year with the hit tune 'Blinding lights' and 'After Hours' which have been well received by critics.
And it would seem The Weeknd also did everything possible to make sure he was noticed. According to Complex he steadily promoted his music in the ways that award shows usually like. “He even put together a nice little “for your consideration” trailer that highlighted the success of his year at the awards deadline.”
The Weeknd has lashed out and called the grammys corrupt.
"The Grammys remain corrupt," The Weeknd wrote on Twitter on 25 November "You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency..."
Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording Academy’s interim president, said in a statement obtained by USA TODAY that he too was surprised by the Weeknd shutout. But he denied any wrongdoing by the organization or the process in the "unusual and competitive year," which saw a record number of submissions.
"We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated," said Mason in the statement. "His music this year was excellent."
Hmm…very curious.
Selena Gomez
Finally as for Selena Gomez, who by the way is Abel’s ex and Justin’s ex, it would seem she was also left off the list. Her album rare was not nominated even though it yielded the top songs Look at Her Now and Lose You to Love Me.
Conclusion
Well hopefully Nikki Minaj’s tweet is some comfort to all those who didn’t make it on to the nominations, she never won an award but is still successful. Clearly they don’t define who you are nor your success. Tell us what you think?
