Everyone knows who Billie Eilish is but not many people know much about her talented older brother Finneas O’Connell, except that he works with her which is true of course. O’Connell has co-written and produced every single song Billie Eilish has ever released but that isn’t all he has done.
O’Connell who prefers using Mononym Finneas has reseased several singles as a solo artist and his debut EP called “Bloody Harmony” was released in October 2019, but perhaps his more notable talent is his ability to execute other artist’s visions including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello and Demi Lovato.
We bring you a list of some of the songs Finneas has been involved in creating which you may not have known about.
Justin Bieber's self-reflective single "Lonely"
Let’s start with Justin Bieber’s “Lonely” which Finneas co-produced along with Benny Blanco. The song is about how Bieber struggled emotionally as a famous teenager and is the second single from his sixth album. Benny Blanco called it "one of my favorite things I've ever been a part of."
Demi Lovato’s political single “Commander in Chief”
Demi Lovato’s political single “Commander in Chief” release on October 14 2020 was also something Finneas helped with. Demi Lovato claims she had often felt the urge to write the president a letter and her song was an attempt to ask the president to explain himself.
Finneas spoke out about her bravery for releasing something like that by writing on Instagram;
"I think people underestimate the bravery it takes to put out a song like this when your platform is as large as Demi's is.
But I'm sure if you asked her, she'd tell you it was her responsibility.
It was an Honor to produce this one for the wildly talented Demi Lovato."
Selena Gomez’s emotional ballad, “Lose You to Love Me"
Now the next song was one of the greatest hits and truly memorable, Selena Gomez’s emotional ballad, “Lose You to Love Me.” Though it was produced mainly by the Swedish Duo Mattman & Robin, Finneas was involved in additional production.
He says he added some "textural stuff"like string plucks and overtone synths, to "make the production feel a little bit more alive."
"He just added that final touch, and it just really made a difference from the second chorus into what he did in the bridge," Gomez told Sirius XM at the time, adding "it was really awesome."
Camila Cabello's "Used To This"
Finneas also cowrote and produce “Used To This” with Camila Cabello which is part of her album “Romance” which was released in 2019. However this time it seems it was Camila who had a very powerful affect on him. After the song was released he wrote on Instagram;
"Camila Cabello is one of my favorite artists. She's also a friend of mine now which makes me feel VERY COOL!!!
I stood in the crowd at lollapalooza last summer and watched her set in awe. I texted my managers/publisher right then that I would die to write with her.
I love this album so much and I could NOT be more grateful to be a part of it!"
Ashe's breakthrough single “Moral of the Story”
He also cowrote and coproduced Ashe’s breakthrough single “Moral of the Story” which featured in Netflix’s “To All the Boys”. Finneas has actually worked with Ashe on several tracks but it was this one they believed in, except it took a bit of time before it became big.
"Finneas and I, I remember us being like, 'We really believe in this record. We think this record's going to be important for my career,'" Ashe told Insider.
"When it didn't do too much, we were like, 'Oh, man. I guess we were wrong.' So when it started to take off, we were like, 'We were not! Wrong!'"
Conclusions
Finneas has been involved in many other songs with many talented artists. Sometimes the real talent is the one people don’t see. At least that is the case here.
